Etsy VAT on fees for Hungarian sellers

A Hungarian Etsy seller without an EU VAT ID pays €1.34 of 27% ÁFA on €4.97 of Etsy fees for a €30.00 item with €6.00 shipping, so total fees are €6.31 and €29.69 is left (rates read 9 Oct 2026).

How Etsy charges ÁFA on its fees

Etsy's fees are listed without VAT. For sellers in Hungary, Etsy adds Hungarian ÁFA at 27% on top of the fee lines: the transaction fee, payment processing, the regulatory operating fee and the listing fee. The ÁFA shows up in your Payment account, and Etsy sends a monthly invoice on the first of the next month.

If you add a valid EU VAT ID to your shop, Etsy stops adding ÁFA. Instead, the monthly invoice says that no VAT was charged on your seller fees. This is called reverse charge: Etsy doesn't collect the tax, and the seller accounts for it. Whether that 27% is still a cost depends on your ÁFA status, which is why there are three scenarios.

Three scenarios, one order

Worked example: €30.00 item + €6.00 shipping, paid out in EUR.

For your own order: fees €6.31, ÁFA €1.34, left after Etsy €29.69.

1. No EU VAT ID. Etsy adds 27% ÁFA to every fee line. You see it on Etsy's invoice and it comes out of your balance.

2. EU VAT ID, but not registered as an ÁFA payer (for example, alanyi adómentes). Etsy's invoice uses reverse charge and shows no ÁFA. But under reverse charge the buyer of the service, here the seller, declares and pays the 27% ÁFA to NAV, and NAV's guidance on the közösségi adószám covers alanyi adómentes sellers who buy services from another EU country. The money goes to NAV instead of Etsy, so the total is the same as in scenario 1.

3. EU VAT ID and registered as an ÁFA payer. The ÁFA under reverse charge can be deducted, so the net cost of ÁFA on fees is €0.00. That is the only case where fees drop to €4.97.

Many fee calculators and AI answers say "with a VAT ID, VAT on fees is zero". That is true for Etsy's invoice, but for scenario 2 it isn't true for your costs.

Who needs an EU VAT ID

An EU VAT ID changes who collects the ÁFA, not always how much you pay:

  • Without it, Etsy collects 27% ÁFA on its fees.
  • With it, Etsy collects nothing, and you account for the ÁFA yourself.

Only an ÁFA-registered seller ends up with lower fees. For an alanyi adómentes seller, the ID moves the payment from Etsy to NAV and adds a filing step. Whether you should have one is a question for NAV or an accountant.

Getting a közösségi adószám

In Hungary the EU VAT ID is the közösségi adószám, issued by NAV. See nav.gov.hu.

Questions

Does Etsy charge VAT on fees in Hungary?

Yes. Without an EU VAT ID, Etsy adds 27% ÁFA to its fees: €1.34 on a €30.00 item with €6.00 shipping. With a valid EU VAT ID, Etsy's invoice shows no ÁFA (reverse charge), and the seller accounts for it instead.

Do I need a VAT ID to sell on Etsy?

No. You can sell from Hungary without one, and Etsy then adds 27% ÁFA to your fees. A VAT ID removes ÁFA from Etsy's invoice, but if you are not ÁFA-registered you still pay the 27% to NAV. Fee mechanics, not tax advice: see nav.gov.hu.

Why does Etsy say my VAT ID is invalid?

Etsy only stops adding ÁFA when it accepts your EU VAT ID as valid. You can check the number in the European Commission's VIES VAT number check. Until the ID is accepted, your fees look like the "No EU VAT ID" column above. You can add or update the ID in Shop Manager.

Can I claim VAT back on Etsy fees?

Only if you are registered as an ÁFA payer and have given Etsy a valid EU VAT ID (scenario 3). Then the ÁFA under reverse charge can be deducted and its net cost is €0.00. Without a VAT ID, Etsy's 27% is part of your fees.

Why am I paying VAT on Etsy fees?

Because Etsy has no valid EU VAT ID for your shop, so it adds Hungarian ÁFA at 27% to its fees. If you have a VAT ID but are not ÁFA-registered, you don't pay ÁFA to Etsy, but you still pay the 27% to NAV.
